5 miles S of Loomis or 4.5 miles
NE of Conconully, 14,000 acres. More butterfly species than
anywhere in the state, plus deer, bighorn sheep, moose, black
bear, cougar, waterfowl, more. From Riverside, north on SR 97
to Mile Post 304.6.Turn left on South Pine Creek Rd
for 7 miles.
Whistler Canyon
• A best bet for wildlife viewing.The area
boasts the largest band of Bighorn Sheep, plus wild Turkeys,
Mule Deer, Chucker, Grouse, and an occasional bear can been
seen near the trailhead and rocky bluffs. Part of the Pacific
Northwest Trail, go 3 miles south of Oroville off state
Highway 97.
COLUMBIA RIVER REGION
Bridgeport Bar
Near the mouth of the Okanogan River,
450 acres of wetlands and ponds.Waterfowl, Bald eagles,
American white pelicans, long-billed curlews and Sandhill
cranes, California quail, Ring-necked pheasants and grey
partridge occur on the area.
Indian Dan Canyon
4,412 acres northeast of Brewster.
Shrubsteppe habitat occurs extensively on this unit, providing
habitat for sharp-tailed grouse, white-tailed jackrabbit, sage
and Brewer’s sparrows, mule deer, white-tailed deer and other
wildlife.
Chelan Ridge
• Raptors, migratory birds. Copper Mountain.
From Pateros, travel up Hwy 153 7 mi, left on Black Canyon
Rd. Drive 9 miles to T-intersection with road No. 8020,
turn left, travel 3.6 miles to the Chelan Ridge Raptor
Migration project.
Lake Roosevelt National Recreation Area
• Bald eagle,
bear, elk, bobcat, raptors, waterfowl.
RufusWoods Lake
• 51 miles long above Chief Joseph Dam;
wildlife viewing and birdwatching.
